Il verbo to waive, generalmente riferito a un diritto o a una regola, significa “rinunciare”: to waive the right to appeal, rinunciare al diritto di appello; to waive charges, rinunciare alle accuse. Il sostantivo che ne deriva è waiver, “rinuncia a un diritto”, che non va confuso con waver (si pronunciano allo stesso modo), colui che fa cenno con la mano (derivato di to wave): The waiver of the claim meant that the land was solely his, la rinuncia al ricorso significò che la terra fu esclusivamente sua.
